MuchMusic killed the video star
REMEMBER WHEN MUCHMUSIC actually played music? Now they’re pretty much limited to Punch Much, the mindless program where MuchMusic viewers can see their text messages on television while music videos play—how riveting.
I used to enjoy watching music videos and seeing what obscure outfit Britney Spears would wear next, back when she used to be (semi-)normal. After seeing the “Oops!... I Did it Again” video I remember discussing her red, skin-tight unitard in detail during recess at my elementary school with my friends.
Unfortunately, MuchMusic has fallen by the wayside and does not produce the type of content that merits a passionate discussion in the schoolyard anymore. Instead of broadcasting interesting music videos that are inspired by creative and weird musicians, the station has decided to run a slew of trashy, irrelevant programs that cater to brain-dead teen viewers.
Some of the few programs that I actually enjoy watching on MuchMusic are French Kiss, which explores indie-pop music en Français and usually has some decent music, and The Wedge, another program that features music that is not on the top 30 countdown.
Other than the two programs mentioned above, MuchMusic does not have much to offer music fans anymore. There are few music videos that are actually broadcast on the station and unfortunately, most content is just silly television shows that feature drunken losers discussing how irritating their roommates are: think A Shot at Love with Tila Tequila.
Tila Tequila—a former nude model, for those confused and thinking I am discussing everyone’s favourite ByWard Market club—has nothing to do with music, and it is perplexing as to why her show would even be on MuchMusic.
No wonder the independent music scene has exploded in the past few years. Who wants to sit around and watch MusicMusic these days while there are thousands of remarkable and talented artists waiting to be discovered?
Until MuchMusic gets its act together, stops playing crappy celebrity television series and silly shows like Video on Trial, I will continue to watch music videos through other mediums that deliver free content and good music. I certainly can’t find them on TV anymore.
