Sexy layer dessert

This recipe is a mix of old-fashioned strawberry shortcake and classic brownies. Instead of using light shortcake, a rich chocolate brownie is used for the layers of this seductive dessert. The darker the chocolate used, the more potent the aphrodisiac powers. (Parts of this recipe have been derived from joyofbaking.com.)

Ingredients 1 1/2 chocolate bars (for this recipe, President’s Choice dark 70 percent cocoa 300g bars were used, approximately $4.50 a bar) 1 cup unsalted butter 6 large eggs 2 cups sugar 1 tbsp. vanilla 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1 tsp. baking powder

The oven should be set to 350 °F and a greased 9 x 13 inch pan should be used.

  1. Melt chocolate and butter in a bowl over a pot with boiling water. A double boiler can be used as well.
  2. Whisk together eggs and sugar. Once chocolate and butter are melted, add to egg and sugar mixture.
  3. Mix all dry ingredients together in a separate bowl.
  4. Fold dry ingredients into wet ingredients.
  5. Pour batter into greased pan and bake for approximately 40–50 minutes.

Once the brownies have cooled for 10–15 minutes, it’s time to make them sexy.

This is only one suggestion—creativity is key!

  1. Wash about seven strawberries and prepare about one cup of whipped cream.
  2. Cut square brownie from prepared batch.
  3. The brownies will be tall, which is perfect for making layers. Cut brownie into two large pieces by cutting lengthwise through centre of pan.
  4. Place bottom layer onto plate. Top with a couple sliced strawberries with a dollop of whipped cream. Add another brownie slice and repeat until satisfied with height of prepared dessert. (You may need to cut another brownie.)
  5. Add a dusting of icing sugar, a heart cookie, or anything that you feel suits the occasion.
  6. Grab two forks (or one) and eat slowly to enjoy the richness of the treat. Any leftover whipped cream and strawberries can be fed to your partner or used in any manner you desire.
